The Honourable Member representing Yenagoa/Kolokuma-Opokuma Federal Constituency Bayelsa State on Wednesday 4th August, hosted the Belarusian Consul to Nigeria, Mr. Sergei Zaitsev in the National Assembly.
Both men were excited to discuss several areas of mutual benefit ranging from education, agriculture, infrastructure advancement, science & technology, aviation sector & services, security, architecture, human capital development, vocational training amongst other issues.
In education, the Belarusian Consul highlighted his government’s interest in enhancing existing cooperation in education between Nigeria and emphasized that they are open to expanding the opportunity to Bayelsa State Universities. The diplomat expressed optimism that Belarusian Universities are willing to exchange programs with Bayelsa State Universities and higher institutions.
While responding to the Consular, Prof. Steve Azaiki noted that Minsk, the Belarus capital is known to be one of the cleanest cities in the world, and he believes that Bayelsa State capital Yenagoa can model after it if the mutual cooperation is well managed.
Prof. Azaiki also stated that Bayelsans have indeed benefitted from the Belarusian educational system where a lot of professionals have been trained and most of them have returned back to Nigerian Universities to share the knowledge gained. He therefore used the opportunity of the Consular’s visit to appeal for more opportunities to be developed using Bayelsa State as a pilot scheme for Nigeria.
Prof. Steve Azaiki, OON. further promised to use the opportunity of this visit to promote his quest to improve the human capital development index of his constituents, nay Bayelsans in general.
