The maiden commercial flight to Yenagoa, Bayelsa State has put the put the Ijaw nation on the global map and has given them a reason to smile once again, this was the view of Prof. Steve Azaiki, Federal Lawmaker representing Yenagoa/Kolokuma-Opokuma Federal Constituency.
It was widely reported on Wednesday the 11th of August, 2021 an aircraft operated by the United Nigeria Airlines landed at the Bayelsa State International Airport to herald the beginning of commercial flight operations at the airport.
According to Prof. Azaiki, who posted on his facebook page before boarding the flight from Lagos, said; “The first Commercial flight to Yenagoa. We have just boarded at the Lagos MM2 of the Domestic wing. The Ijaw Nation has reason to smile. To God be the glory. Congratulation Bayelsa and indeed Nigeria.”
The State Governor, Senator Douye Diri led the list of dignitaries on the maiden flight. Others were United Nigeria airline chairman, Obiora Okonkwo, Tokyo Olympics wrestling silver medalist, Blessing Oborududu, King Alfred Diete-Spiff, Ambassador Boladei Igali, Hon Fred Agbedi, Hon Preye Oseke, Hon Fred Obuah as well as the state House of Assembly members and commissioners among other dignitaries.
Governor Duoye Diri announced that full commercial flight would commence in two weeks in view of number of bookings made. The governor claimed that with regular commercial flights into and out of Bayelsa, economic activities would begin to boom as well as opportunities for prosperity in the state.
“This significant event is the culmination of the aspirations that was birthed by late Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, former governor of the state, which was eventually built by Senator Seriake Dickson, my predecessor. And it is under my administration that this project was crystallized. This is a demonstration that team work truly works… I am happy to report to you that the pilot of the United Nigeria Airlines said our runway is one of the best in Nigeria.”
